[random notes: Passion – movie trivia thoughts]

During the scourging scene, James Caviezel accidentally got whipped twice. The first time knocked the wind out of him, and the second time hurt so much it caused him wrench his hand quickly from his shackles, scraping his wrist badly. The remainder of the scourging scenes were finished by using visual effects: the actors playing Roman soldiers held sticks without the leather tails, and acted out the whipping motion, while Caviezel would react as if hit. The tails were later digitally composited into the shots. Make-up wounds on Caviezel’s body were digitally covered until the actual hit by the whip, creating the illusion that they suddenly appeared.

IMDB’s Trivia for The Passion of the Christ

I like reading trivia stuff. My brain is full of it. I do not know why I am such a trivia junkie, but knowing random things people don’t usually know makes me… dunno, feel smart, i guess.

Anyway. I was reading the trivia for the Passion of the Christ the other day and came upon this bit.

Jim Caviezel accidentally got whipped twice… and it was already a big deal.

That made me think of what Jesus went through… for He wasn’t accidentally hit twice. He was given 39 cruel lashes and those Roman guards weren’t pretending.

The thought made me stop and shudder at first… and then say a heartfelt “Thank you…” (not for the first time, but… but yeah…)…

Although I read this two days ago, it got stuck in my mind…

His love is astounding.

I love Foolish Things’ song called Find Your Way Back

It’s going to crush You inside and out. It’s going to break You, my Son. But Jesus the choice is Yours because I know the sin is theirs to pay, the debt is theirs to owe.

But we can make a way, close the gap their sin has made, Your blood could right their wrongs, and we could sing our song to call them…

“Find your way back to me, I know your faults, but I was pierced so you’d be healed. Turn your heart back to Me, I paid the cost ’cause I couldn’t change the way I feel”

Can this cup be taken? Dad I see, if I take their sin upon myself, You’ll turn your back on me. I know they’re guilty, but I love them too. If my death can build a bridge for them I’ll bring them back to You, and we’ll sing it…

“Find your way back to Me, I know your faults, but I was pierced so you’d be healed. Turn your heart back to Me, I paid the cost ’cause I couldn’t change the way I feel”

So I made a way, closed the gap your sin had made, the blood can right your wrongs, would you listen to the song, we’re singing…

“Find your way back to Me, I know your faults, but I was pierced so you’d be healed. Turn your heart back to Me, I paid the cost ’cause I couldn’t change the way I feel”

  • I had read this ditty about the scouring scene but never gave it any thought. I am glad you reminded me of it again. Like you said: after two times it was too much, I can't imagine what it would have been like for Jesus. gonna have to find that song on YouTube and listen to it.

  • No video for the song. Only Jefferson Starship and Miley (and that ain't going to happen). Lyrics will have to do. 🙂

  • yeah, Foolish Things got great lyrics in all of their songs…

if you won't find it on youtube, lemme know – i can send the mp3 by e-mail.

  • Did not know that bit of trivia, or if I did I had forgotten it. I had read in my studies how the scourge actually flays the skin and the number of lashes applied in punishment were strictly monitored because they were known to kill the recipient.

    • yah… that's why it was said back in Deuteronomy 25:2-3 that "…if the wicked man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall then make him lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of stripes according to his guilt. He may beat him forty times but no more, so that he does not beat him with many more stripes than these and your brother is not degraded in your eyes."

  • It really is crushing to my heart when I consider what He willingly subjected Himself to so that all of us could have the opportunity to have a relationship with Him.

Have you heard the song David Crowder covered called "How He Loves"? I cannot help but get choked up every time I hear it. Here is a vid link:

  • herb, I love that song by Crowder. It's my favorite of all of Crowder's songs. I bought the CD just because I loved that song. it's amazing to think how God loved us so much…and that jesus suffered so much. to think that this punishment was meant for us, yet He took it. Great stuff Zee.

  • There is a line in that Crowder song that says "He is jealous for me" – I began to perceive His jealousy a bit differently because of it – I had always thought of His jealousy in terms of our affection for Him (no other gods but YHWH), but this song makes me think of His jealousy in terms of His affection for us – no one could love us more.

    • the verse that came to mind when you mentioned His jealousy… from Songs of Solomon 8:6… "For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave. Love flashes like fire, the brightest kind of flame."

or like Eugene Peterson translated it… "Love is invincible facing danger and death. Passion laughs at the terrors of hell. The fire of love stops at nothing – it sweeps everything before it."

  • zenichka

Herb – will check the song in the morning one I get to a normal computer (using my iPod right now). I really like David Crowder's stuff.

Michelle – yeah. Sometimes I wonder whether I was worth such a sacrifice, but He reminds me of His awesome love… "what is a man that You take such carE of him?"
